COMMUNITY ENDORSEMENTS

"As an owner of Seaflora Skincare Inc., a local Sooke business, having the support of local government has meant a lot. Mayor Maja Tait gets it - when local government stands with local businesses, it helps us to reach out provincially and across the country  to other clients and businesses, and to look  internationally to export.  Mayor Maja Tait understands that supporting our small businesses means a stronger local economic development for a vibrant core where businesses will start-up in Sooke, expand in Sooke and create more jobs in Sooke. Let's continue with Mayor Tait's forward-looking momentum for local economic development.

In this municipal election, I'm voting to re-elect Mayor Maja Tait. (Full Disclosure....as you may know I am the campaign manager for the 2018 Mayor Tait Campaign)."

~ Diane Bernard, Seaflora Skincare

During her six years on Council and four years as Mayor of Sooke, Maja has demonstrated a very strong talent for leadership. She is smart, principled, honest, dignified, inclusive, approachable and very wellspoken.

Maja listens first. Locally, she works well with and supports Sooke groups looking for improvements in health care delivery, transportation, affordable housing, Hwy 14 improvements, etc. A thoughtful and creative problem solver, Maja has developed a profound understanding of what Sooke wants and needs.

Then she speaks … very persuasively. On her own initiative, she went forth into the larger political arena of the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) where she will be First Vice-President!. She has also developed Provincial and Federal allies with a potential for alternative solutions and future funding. Maja has gained much respect. She expresses Sooke’s needs along with plausible solutions. With her talent for expressing complex issues simply, her message is always very clear! As a result, she has the respect and the ear of all levels of government. And we – the people of Sooke - reap the benefits!

Her enduring goal? - to ensure that solutions become realities so that we people of Sooke enjoy good quality of life. Make no mistake! - In spite of her busy, youthful lifestyle, Maja is always on the job as Mayor of Sooke!

Clearly, Maja Tait is the best candidate to lead our community into the future!

~David and Carol Mallett

Over the years I have had the privilege of working with Mayor Tait on several community initiatives. One that stands out both in its complexity and urgency is improving primary healthcare access for Sooke residents that do not have a family physician. As a former health authority CEO in BC, I recognize the challenges faced particularly by small communities in addressing the shortage of family physicians and other key healthcare providers. Maja has been instrumental in bringing the key decision makers to the table to formulate a well thought out plan to provide more Sooke residents with a primary healthcare provider.

Involved in the decision making were a number of players: the Ministry of Health, Island Health, the South Island Division of Family Practice, the West Coast Family Medical Clinic, and the Sooke Region Communities Health Network. In finding a way forward, Maja demonstrated both her strong leadership and advocacy skills while at the same time building consensus in finding a workable solution that would benefit Sooke. Maja was instrumental in organizing a health forum to seek community input into this process. This resulted in a joint submission sent to the Ministry of Heath on October 1st. We are expecting an announcement from the Ministry of Health in the next few weeks that will greatly improve primary healthcare access for Sooke residents.

Full disclosure… as you may know I am acting as Mayor Maja Tait’s financial agent for this campaign. In doing so, I chose to support the person I think has the drive, the knowledge, the experience, and the energy to ensure what it is we love about Sooke will not be lost as the community grows.

"Maja has accomplished so much as our Mayor and needs to continue. Thank you Maja for all that you have done!""Maja Tait has shown her dedication to the community over and over. Her volunteer work as well as her hard work as a community leader speaks volumes to this dedication. Maja has accomplished so much as our Mayor and needs to continue. Thank you Maja for all that you have done!"

"I don’t think it will surprise you that tomorrow (during advanced polls from 8 to 8 at the community hall!!!), I will vote to re-elect MajaTait for Mayor. Now, I’m not here professing to know much about local politics, I’m learning every day and am so lost half the time. But, as someone who lives in, works in and loves this growing little town, I’ve decided to educate myself a bit more! Here’s what I can speak about to this upcoming election and why I’m voting for Maya Tait!
Maja supports small businesses, I’ve seen it first hand whether it’s buying a latte, attending local markets or in the public hearings. I work for a small business. My family owns that small business. Shopping locally matters to me. Cultivating a community that opens itself up to growth while keeping its authenticity is something I think is really important. Advocating for small businesses and supporting them is a way to do that! And I think Maja is someone who will put their best foot forward in allowing that to happen.
Maja isn’t driven by ego. She’s driven by a genuine love for Sooke and municipal politics. With a decade of being on Sooke council under her belt, she’s made connections and relationships for this town and represented us in a way that we can be proud as hell!!
Her priorities are the same as ours: growth in local healthcare; expanding youth/family/seniors recreational and community services; beautification of the downtown core (which has already come leaps and bounds in the last four years), as well as sustainable infrastructure, affordable housing and improved public transit!
Maja is one humble, tough, hardworking, accomplished, intelligent woman. I think as a community, we owe it to ourselves to re-elect mayor Maja Tait!!"
~Mackenzie Fisher, The Artisans Garden

"I heard Maja Tait talk on Monday. I admire this woman and wasn’t surprised to hear how hard she has worked for Sooke to be heard at levels other than just local .... including being a member of UBCM. I was surprised, however, to learn we would lose these connections and specifically this seat should she not stay in office. It is not my place to tell anyone how they should vote .... but should you be undecided please read this and check Maja’s FB page to see exactly what we would be losing. I can’t vote, but Maja has prompted me to get my citizen sorted so I can vote in future."

~Zoe Baldwin

"Today I voted for Maja Tait! I feel that she is a woman of proper moral conscience with the managerial ability to oversee the administration of this city --- our city!"

~Sifu Koshin Moonfist

Maja’s unselfish approach to leadership has brought more civility and respect to our municipal politics than we’ve seen in the nearly 20 years since incorporation. As well, she has developed a good working relationship with the Premier and other municipal leaders in our region and throughout BC. With Maja’s acclamation as First Vice President of the Union of BC Municipalities, I am proud to say, Sooke is well represented provincially as well as at home.

Thanks, Maja …keep the momentum going!

As business owners, and residents of Sooke, we would like to praise Maja Tait on her service to the Sooke community. As a vendors in our local Sooke Night Market we've seen Maja attend that market every week. She tries to support all the local vendors, and goes around and chats with them. She is always buying, and carries bags to support us.

Thank you Maja Tait for your service to our community, and we wish you all the best.

~ Paul & Kelly DeRocco, Fudge In A Around

"Maja captured my attention and respect as well as that of the whole of the Union BC Municipalities several years ago. This was not just for being elected as Third Vice President of the UBCM Executive, but in how she handled a situation when she became a new mom. Actions of a few on Sooke Council drew the disgust of the over 400 members of the UBCM, and a grass roots initiative arose as a response and set in motion initiatives to support elected officials who choose to serve both their communities and families.   Maja showed us that day what leadership looked like and received a standing ovation.

Today, Sooke has a power house of a Mayor, one who this year became the Vice President of the UBCM Executive.  It is a remarkable honour when over 400 elected officials see, in her, the leadership qualities they want to represent them.  Just think of that for a moment. Sooke’s Mayor is seen as one of the most well respected elected officials in the Province of BC, across 152 other municipalities.  Impressive.

I think Maja demonstrates a professionalism and resolve that is hard to match.

Good luck Maja!

"I have been privileged to have worked with Maja Tait and I am so impressed by her capacity to take on life - career, politics, family, friends and play.  What struck me immediately upon meeting Maja was her compassion for people and her willingness to jump in and make a real difference.  She is analytical and compassionate, logical and generous, loyal and open minded and she gets things done.  She has my vote."

"Maja is our choice for mayor. She has shown herself to be very effective as a communicator and one who gets things done, be it in the fields of transportation, health care, education, infrastructure, the arts, and economic opportunities.  She is a strong advocate at the CRD table and has a good working relationship with the B.C. Government.  VOTE FOR MAJA TAIT AS MAYOR on OCT 20."

"Community connection? Maja gets how important it is. Her support helped make Sooke home to Harbourside Cohousing in 2016. Maja's advocacy for cohousing also made a difference for nearby West Wind Harbour Cohousing, which is about to start construction. Maja understands that flourishing in cohousing through neighbourly mutual support is much more affordable than institutional independent living, and a lot more fun!"

"Maja Tait has demonstrated strong leadership and provided tangible results during her term as our Mayor.  Maja represents our growing community well and has developed critical relationships with provincial decision-makers to support solutions for the things that matter most to our growing municipality especially transportation, health, economic growth, education, the environment, as well as a host of other items.

This forward momentum to keep Sooke progressing in the right direction should not be compromised and we urge residents to Re-Elect Maja Tait  October 20th."

"Since 2008, Bob and I have observed Maja in action at the District’s council table both as a councillor, and for the last 4 years, as our Mayor.  Everybody is aware that Sooke is changing and today, with this additional growth, we now face a number of critical development and planning issues. There’s health care, transportation, infrastructure, aging population, and more.

When we first arrived in Sooke, in the 1970s it was much smaller. We chose to live in Sooke because it is a healthy, vibrant community. Now, almost 40 years later – Sooke is facing lots of pressure around growth. It’s important that local government work collaboratively with its citizens and Maja has done this well. She is known for her hard work with our local organizations and local citizen groups. However, with the additional pressures of fast growth on our community, Sooke must now work with other levels of government, including the CRD, other BC municipalities as well as with the Provincial government to find the right balance between wise development and strengthening the region’s infrastructure.

Fortunate for us, this is where Mayor Maja Tait excels!  More than ever, we need a mayor who is a proven advocate for Sooke. She is known. She is already a respected player at the tables for transit, Highway 14, urgent health care, food security, culture and the arts.

When we have had concerns, Maja listens, knows when to act and is respectful to other points of view.

Maja has proven leadership and credibility skills to work for Sooke. She is an effective partner with all governing bodies to be best prepared for our future.

There is no doubt, Mayor Maja Tait has the intelligence and is our full time Mayor to serve, protect and enhance our healthy, vibrant Sooke community."

"As the co-owner of the Sooke Harbour House, I have watched in the last four years,  the dynamic and quiet leadership of Mayor Maja Tait.  I have watched our Sooke profile,  especially in health, transit, tourism and education grow. Her latest  achievement is her re-election as 1st Vice Chair at UBCM. Thanks to Maja, Sooke now has an important presence at the CRD, within BC municipalities, as well as excellent communications with our Provincial Government.

What this means to me is now in 2018, as a growing community and destination choice, Maja Tait is the best candidate to reinforce and keep on increasing our successful  profile throughout our region, our island and our province.  Sooke is now, more than ever a chosen destination not just to tour but to live. Let’s not break this momentum with Mayor Maja Tait as our Ambassador to make Sooke THE place to BE, to LIVE, to WORK and INVEST."
